) - Some folk turn to a therapist to sort out their issues, others talk to buddies, but NY barrister Philip Galanes found the only way to resolve issues in his life was to scribble a novel about them.

Galanes, a company and entertainment barrister in non-public practice, wrote his 1st novel "Father's Day" in 2004 about a person whose pa committed suicide, as his pa had done. His describes his 2nd novel, "Emma's Table" due out in Aug, as a comedy of manners that centers around a celebrity decorator and merchandising mogul reminiscent of Martha Stewart.

Galanes, who also writes a recommendation column "Social Q's" in the NY Times, spoke to Reuters lately. Q : What started you, a barrister, writing fiction? A : "Well, I used fiction to explore issues that were somehow too difficult for me to work out in my real life. I could put them down and start looking at them actually closely and move the personalities around and think them thru. It was rather like stick puppets for me and my issues. Some folk go and talk to therapists, some talk to their partners, some have a bunch of buddies apart from me working on this book is my technique of attempting to sort out my problems.". A : "The 1st book I wrote was about a man whose dad kills himself, which mine did. It was simply too hard a subject for me to make any progress on in my real life.
