How to Write a Book

In writing and in running, pacing is everything.

The concept to become a writer happened to him whilst watching a baseball game in Tokyo in 1978. "You know what? I could write a novel," he suspected to himself. Whilst he was operating his club, he had written 2, "Hear the Wind Sing" and "Pinball" in 1973.

He made a decision to dedicate himself to fiction full-time.

"I had write a novel to give it everything I had," he writes. "I knew that if I probably did things half-heartedly and they did not work out, I'd have regrets.". But without the physical effort needed to keep a business running, he got fat, in spite of smoking 3 packs of cigarettes a day. So in 1982, he began to run, and he hasn't stopped. For Murakami, "running is both exercise and a metaphor. Running day after day, piling up the races, bit by bit I raise the bar, and by clearing each level I raise myself.". After his late 40s, Murakami's write a novel marathon times started to get worse. He is hoping that won't be the case with his stories, and the discipline and endurance needed in long-distance running will help him in sustaining a quantity of creative excellence achieved by his heroes, like Dostoyevsky, who knocked out "The Siblings Karamozov" just before his dying at sixty, and Domenico Scarlatti, who wrote the majority of his 555 piano sonatas between the ages of 57 and 62. Whilst running, he listens to 1960s pop by the Lovin' Spoonful and soul music by Carla Thomas and Otis Redding. By Haruki Murakami, interpreted by Philip Gabriel.
