Nick Harkaway describes the challenges of writing a novel in the shadow of a famous dad. Harkaway : did you know who I am? I am hoping not I had considered it. Actually I'd was hoping to keep away from this moment for a bit.

In the final analysis, I wrote a few - but by Jan 2006, I wanted out. I was getting married, and my career wasn't taking off. All of a sudden, the concept of writing a book was like coming home. I came of age between the decline of that same wall and the passing of the Soviet Union. That's who I am, and my book is in part a reaction to that. It is a journey without the faintest attempt at realism. There is not now, nor I believe will there ever be, a le Carreacute ; novel with ninjas in it. Maybe a person will issue a revised version. By Apr, I had 200 pages and a growing sense that I could do this. I realized around then that if I sold the book, I was going to be responding lots of le Carreacute ; queries. as I wrote it, so that the 1st person to get it entire was my mummy. She was fond of it, and passed the manuscript on to my dad. He also poked Patrick to read it earlier instead of later, but did not mention the Name. It's a giant advantage, and one I am deeply conscious of. Patrick read the book, and we had a meeting.

Dodgy and embarrassed, I admitted to my parentage. He took it on board, found it softly fascinating, dropped it. We probably did a deal with William Heinemann, a division of Random House. There just stayed the query of a name to call my private. The one I was born with - Cornwell - has some baggage of its own:. "No relation of the writer, I suppose?". "I had no concept Patricia Cornwell was a person. In truth it was Patricia ( to whom I'm really not related ) and Bernard ( similarly ) who were my problem. I liked the way it sounded : far-off places, attainments of daring. In the middle of this confusion, Knopf, my US publisher, asked me to fly to LA for a day. I was home nicely timed for the UK launch on June five. I keep attempting to explain that I do not mind - it's just part of the landscape to me, like my personal nose.
